Emma (1932 film)

Marie Dressler starred in this Clarence Brown directed 1932 film about a mature woman who selflessly and lovingly raises a widower's children, giving them constant care and attention as they grow into heedless and spoiled young adults. After many years the family thinks she needs a vacation, but the only way they can convince her is when father decides to travel, and she goes to look after him. On the trip he proposes marriage- which she accepts. Tragedy strikes when he collapses while rowing a boat and dies soon afterwards. The children are shocked- less by his death than by his marriage to a woman they consider a servant. They suspect her of being after his money, and possibly of causing his death.
