Jeanne De Casalis

Jeanne De Casalis

Jeanne de Casalis (born 22 May 1897 in Basutoland, South Africa as Casalis de Pury), was a West End stage, radio, and film actress and dramatic writer, perhaps best known for her character 'Mrs Feather.' She was educated in France - where her father owned one of the largest corset retailers, Charnaux - and began her career in music before working in London. She appeared in such plays as "The Mask of Virtue" with Vivien Leigh (1935), the Agatha Christie play "The Hollow" and such films as Alfred Hitchcock's Jamaica Inn (film) (1939), "Cottage to Let" (1941), and "Nell Gwynn" (1934). She married English actor Colin Clive of Frankenstein (1931 film) fame in June 1929, though they were later estranged for several years before his death on 25 June 1937 from pneumonia. Her second husband, whom she married in approximately 1938, was RAF Wing Commander Cowan Douglas Stephenson; they lived at Hunger Hatch near Ashford, Kent, and remained good friends with Leigh until De Casalis' death on 19 August, 1966.
