Yevgeniy Landis

Yevgeniy Mikhailovich Landis (E.M. Landis, Russian "Евгений Михайлович Ландис") (October 6, 1921 – December 12, 1997) was a Russian mathematician who worked mainly on partial differential equations. He studied at the Moscow State University, where his advisor was Alexander Kronrod, and later Ivan Petrovsky.

Landis was born in Kharkov, Ukraine. He studied and worked at the Moscow State University. In 1946 together with Kronrod he rediscovered Sard's lemma unknown in Russia at the time. Later he worked on uniqueness theorems for elliptic and parabolic differential equations,
Harnack inequalities, and Phragmén-Lindelöf type theorems. With Georgii Adelson-Velsky, he invented the AVL tree datastructure (Landis is the "L" in "AVL"). He died in Moscow.
