Dongduk Women's University is a private university founded by Lee Suk Gu in Seoul, South Korea. It enrolls about 7,000 students, and employs around 200 instructors.

Dongduk Women's University (DWU) is Korea's first private educational institute for women only, originated from Dongwon Girls School (Eui-sook), founded with private capital in 1908. DWU was established based on the main vision of school foundation, which is to carry women's? education that honors truth and respects morality. At present, DWU is composed of 8 colleges, 6 departments, 18 majors, 16 departments of majors,? and 7 graduate schools. We have about 7,500 excellent students 350 faculty members. Also, DWU has produced more than 30,000 graduates who are making active contributions in various fields.

DWU's three main educational visions are as follow:

  1. the university based on trust;
  2. the university where learning is special;
  3. and the university that fosters experts.

Our four main educational goals are as follow:

  1. humanized education (to educate an individual to be an intellectual with strong moral character);
  2. socialized education (to educate an individual who can willingly serve the community);
  3. specialized education (to foster creativity? well balanced with practicality);
  4. and globalized education (a forward-looking, global-minded individual).

As of today, DWU has concluded international exchange agreements with 23 universities in ten different countries, through which students are actively engaged in exchange studies programs. Further, to better meet the demand for English in the globalizing world and to attract foreign students, more courses will be taught in English, and a master plan to build dormitories and a language center has been devised. DWU also offers extensive study abroad programs. To date, we have international exchange programs with 19 universities in 8 countries, actively exchanging students and trainees? every year. Also, under our grand scheme of globalized education, we plan to open dormitories and? a language center while expanding our current English and other foreign language programs.

DWU's education policies are unique in that we try to excel in specializing in the fields in which women have competitive edge over men.? Such fields are Design, Women's Development Science, Performing Arts, Language Study and Information Science, among many. To best support continued progress in those areas, hand-on experience through various training programs offered at such facilities as Design Research Center in Chungdam, Performing Art Center in Daehak-ro, and Dongduk Art Gallery in Insa-dong, all of which are best equipped with the most modern technology.? Academics

Undergraduate offerings at Dongduk Women's University are divided among the Division of Humanities (which provides courses of study in the liberal arts) and the university's eight colleges: the College of Humanities (which includes foreign-language courses), College of Social Science, College of Natural Science, College of Computer and Information Science, College of Pharmacy, College of Arts, College of Design, and College of Performance Arts.

Graduate offerings are divided between the general graduate school and several specialized graduate schools: Fashion, Information Science, Women's Development, Education, Performance Arts, and Obesity Research.

History

Dongduk Women's University was established in 1908. The school opened as Dongduk Women's College (동덕여자대학), a four-year institution, in 1950. It moved to its present location in 1967. The college received permission to open a graduate school in 1980, and gained the status of a university in 1987. The most recent academic reorganization, resulting in the current structure, took place in 2003.
