A nihongo|"suzu"|鈴 is a ball-shaped
Shintoreligious bell. Ringing a handheld clustered suzu like sleigh bells for musical instrument, is same as waving a nihongo| gohei|御幣, means calling gods and divinized heroes; then it gets their spiritual power; so over persons means giving their authority and power to them, or against evils for dispersing.
Therefore suzu itself came to be believed to have spiritual power, then small one became a bell charm called nihongo|
omamori|お守り bestowed by the Shinto shrines.
Ringing suzu hang under the eaves of the Shinto shrine, means like a doorbell for gods. In this case, another flat-shaped one without clapper but mallet, called nihongo|waniguchi|鰐口(literaly crocodile mouth) is also used.
