Train Transit in Guntur

Train trasit is a common mode of transportation in Guntur City and its region. There are many local railway stations to cover its suburban and rural regions. Guntur Junction is a divisional head quarters(Guntur division) of Indian Railways [ [http://www.indianrailways.gov.in Indian Railways ] ] in the south central region [ [http://scrailway.gov.in/web/scrt.htm South Central Railway(Today) ] ] .

History

The first rail lines in Guntur are of Metre Gauge started some time during the early 20th century, between Guntur and Hubli/Goa. Later a Broad Gauge rail line was built between GNT/VJA towards Howrah with the completion of Prakasam Barrage on the River Krishna. By the end of the 20th century Guntur had 4 different railway lines passing through its junction.

Divisional Head Quarters

Guntur Railway division is one of the 62 divisions of Indian Railways and spans across 4 districts of Andhra Pradesh. It has few major and many medium to small stations across this region. Since its inception the division has improved its earnings every year, especially with its Freight/Goods services cite web|url=http://www.hindu.com/2006/04/26/stories/2006042605670200.htm|title=Guntur Railway division earnings|work=Online edition of the Hindu|accessdate=2007-08-27] . The head office (Rail Vikas Bhavan) of the division is located in the Pattabhipuram area of Guntur City.

* Central/Main StationThe Central Station is the largest train station in the division offering many facilities including internet. It has East Terminal and West Terminal with large reservation complexes. There are 7 platforms where the trains are halted. The platforms are inter-connected through an underground subway system.
* Nallapadu (Freight/Goods Services)
* Nambur (University Station)
* New GunturNew Guntur is another transit point in the city region of Guntur near Reddi Palem. It used to host only freight services. Now it became another major transit point in the division, on the Delhi-Chennai route, and to ease the traffic on the Central Station.
* Perecherla
* VejendlaThis train station is located in the rural region which has large Milk Dairy called Sangam Dairy. It is used by the daily vendors that sell fresh produce and milk/other dairy products for the city and the region.

Future Plans

* Adding and introducing new express and super-fast trains for the division (an ongoing process).
* Doubling and electrification of the train tracks involved in all the routes of the division.
* Introducing 'Circular Suburaban' Trains for Guntur City and its suburban region including Tenali and Vijayawada.
* Adding more 'Rail over bridges' throughout the division to eliminate Level crossings.
