Fawaz Gerges

Fawaz Gerges (b. Beirut, Lebanon) is an academic, author, and network news analyst, with expertise on the Middle East. He is currently the Christian A. Johnson Chair in International Affairs and Middle Eastern Studies at Sarah Lawrence College in the United States.

Gerges is also a senior analyst for ABC News and a commentator for National Public Radio's "Morning Edition". He has appeared on many television and radio networks throughout the world, including CNN, CBS, NPR, the BBC and, Al Jazeera. During the weeks leading up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, he was a regular guest on the Oprah Winfrey show.

Gerges earned an M.Sci. at the London School of Economics and a D.Phil. from Oxford University. He taught at Oxford, Harvard, and Columbia universities and was a research fellow at Princeton University for two years. Gerges has spent several years conducting field research in several Middle Eastern countries on relations between the Islamists, jihadists and Western countries, particularly the United States.

Gerges is also the author of numerous books and publications, including "Journey of the Jihadist: Inside Muslim Militancy" and "The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global". Two forthcoming books include "The Iraq Generation of Jihadis" and "Understanding Arab Politics: From Nasser to Bin Laden".
