Bomere Heath

Bomere Heath

Bomere Heath is a village in Shropshire, England lying north of the county town of Shrewsbury and in between Baschurch and Harlescott. It is situated between the A528 road and Berwick Road and is in the borough of Shrewsbury and Atcham. The village sports a convenience store, a post office, garage, Chip shop, hairdressers, and a pub, The Red Lion.

It is the main village of the Pimhill parish, formerly chaired by Brian Watts, also of Bomere Heath. The parish is known as "Bomere Heath and District" these days.

The village has a football team, Bomere Heath FC, (formerly Red Lion FC). David Timms is the manager after taking over from Clive Podd, who guided the team to the second division in the Shrewsbury district Sunday league, after gaining successive promotions. The team have a pitch which is just on the outskirts of the village next to the cricket pitch. The football pitch is considered to be one of the best in the league.

The team also has a successful youth set up which has seen some of the youngsters progress to the first team and has been compared by some, to the youth set up at Crewe Alexandra, albeit on a smaller scale.

Bomere Heath Cricket Club have just been promoted to the Shropshire Premier League, which was a fantastic achievement for a village club. There were some outstanding performances from all the team over the campaign and it was a very deserving feat to pick up the title. The Club were awarded their first ever County 1st XI fixture in 2007, however the torrential rain put paid to the fixture which was hugely disappointing as Bomere Heath is one of the nicest ground's in Shropshire.Even upon the fixture being moved after Bomere very sensibly informed the county with plenty of time that the ground was too wet. Shrewsbury only managed to get the third day on with the first 2 being a complete washout They have had numerous youth Shropshire representative games there and have a further 2 in June 2008 where Shropshire will entertain Warwickshire and Yorkshire.

The late TV presenter and Blue Peter gardener, Percy Thrower lived in the village for many years.

Famous residents

The village has had many notable residents in past and present, many of these people are well known within the village, as well as in the wider community of Shrewsbury and Shropshire.

*Ricky Moir: Ex footballer for Shrewsbury Town

=Etymology=

The etymology is doubtful: But rumour has it that the field between the Shrewsbury Road and Windsor Lane originally had a mere shaped like a bow, hence where "Bo" in Bo-Mere comes from; although the last element is certainly Old English "mere" "lake, mere".
