Sudhnuti

"Sudhnuti" was carved out of Poonch district in 1995. The district is bounded by Rawalakot district in the north, Kotli in the south and Pakistan in the west. The total area of the district is 569 square kilometers, with a population of 214,000 in 1998. The district comprises two tehsils i.e. Pallandari and Balooch. The majority of people living in this area are members of the Sudhan tribe.

History

From the end of the 17th century up to 1837 Poonch was ruled by different Muslim Rajas of Loran. It then fell in to the hands of Raja Faiz Talab Khan of Rajori, and was considered a district of Lahore. In 1846, this area was handed over to Maharaja Ghulab Singh under the Treaty of Amritsar. Maharaja Ghulab Singh handed over Poonch and some other areas to his nephews, Jawahar Singh and Moti Singh. Poonch was annexed and converted into Jagir by Maharaja Hari Singh in 1935-36 by the deposing Raja of Poonch.
