Recaldent

Recaldent

Recaldent is a product that is claimed to strengthen teeth by increasing remineralisation and protect against decay (dental caries). [cite journal |author=Shen P, Cai F, Nowicki A, Vincent J, Reynolds EC |title=Remineralization of enamel subsurface lesions by sugar-free chewing gum containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate |journal=J. CPP-ACP, Casein Phosphopeptides-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate

Recaldent is derived from casein. Casein Phosphopeptides (CPP) are natural occurring molecules which are able to bind calcium and phosphate ions and stabilize Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP).

Professor Reynolds and his team at The University of Melbourne used casein, a peptide derived from milk that can be absorbed through the tooth surface to become new internal tooth structure. Therefore it can be used to reverse small decay sites/spots. It works by providing calcium and phosphate (the building blocks of tooth enamel) in a soluble form to help remineralise the enamel. It can help replace lost minerals in teeth, make them stronger and helps protect them from decay and erosion.

Products

Recaldent is sold internationally by Cadbury-Schweppes. It is mostly used in chewing gum and tooth mousses.

Recaldent Gum and the Military

Recaldent gum was introduced into New Zealand Defence Force ration packs May 2007 by New Zealand Defence Dental Services to aid oral health care for service personnel in the field.

Allergy

It is advised to not to use products containing Recaldent if you suffer from allergy or severe sensitivity to milk, milk protein or milk-based products. The risks are serious and can lead to life-threatening allergic reaction.

Recaldent is a milk-casein derivative found in milk. Recaldent does not contain lactose and will not affect people who are lactose intolerant.
