There are three subspecies: "capensis" (South Africa and extreme southern Namibia), "mackinderi" (western Mozambique and Zimbabwe to west-central Kenya), and "dilloni" (the Ethiopian highlands and southern Eritrea). The distribution of all three is patchy.
