Club career

Guadalajara

Rodríguez was born in Mazatlán, Sinaloa.[1] which is the origin of his nickname "Maza" short for Mazatleco. He began his professional career with Guadalajara, debuting for the club during the 2002 Apertura tournament.

In the Apertura 2006, he helped to tie the final game, which Chivas won 2–1 against Toluca, and helped Chivas win their 11th championship in the Primera División de México

PSV Eindhoven

On 9 May 2008, it was announced that he was transferred for $1.8m to Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. Maza started his debut season mostly on the bench, and proved to be an alternative as one of two centre backs such as Dirk Marcellis. He scored his first goal with the Dutch giants on 25 November 2008 with a blistering 30 yard shot against Heracles Almelo. Maza plays with the number four jersey, previously worn by Manuel da Costa who transferred to ACF Fiorentina in January 2008.

Has played a more central role in the team for the 2009–2010, he's won a starting spot in the defence both for the Dutch League Tournament and the UEFA Europa League.

VfB Stuttgart

On 14 July 2011, Rodríguez signed a three-year contract with VfB Stuttgart for an undisclosed fee. Rodríguez scored his first goal on his debut in a 14–0 win.[2][3] Rodríguez made his Bundesliga debut on 6 August 2011 in a 3–0 win against Schalke 04. He registered an assist in the 37th minute to Cacau which gave Stuttgart a 2–0 lead.[4]

International career

Rodríguez was part of the Mexican 2004 Olympic football team, that exited in the first round, having finished third in group A, below group winners Mali and South Korea.

On 2 April 2006, he was called up to play for the Mexico national team by head coach Ricardo Lavolpe. He played one game in the 2006 World cup, playing against Portugal.

Rodríguez was a part of the Mexico squad who participated in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He was a starter for all of Mexico's group matches, and played the Round of 16 match against Argentina.

During the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Rodríguez, and four other members of the Mexican National Team, tested positive for the banned substance of Clenbuterol and were withdrawn from the team's tournament squad.[5] However, all players were exonerated as FIFA determined that the accused had accidentally ingested the banned substance through contaminated meat that had been served during a pre-tournament training camp.[6]

However, World Anti-Doping Agency appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to request a ban.[7] But on 12 October 2011 WADA withdrew this request after the full file was available for them.[8]
