Piercebridge is a village in the borough of Darlington and the ceremonial county of County Durham, England. It is situated a few miles west of Darlington. It is built on the site of a Roman fort of AD 260-270, which was built at the point where Dere Street crossed the River Tees. The settlement has been in continuous use thereafter.

The remains of the Roman fort are open to the public and the remains of the Roman bridge over the Tees lie around 100 yards south of the current course of the river.

Henry Clay Work, the American composer of 'Marching Through Georgia,' heard of the odd incident in the George Hotel, Piercebridge, when the grandfather clock stopped the moment its owner died. He wrote a celebrated song about it. [ [http://www.grandfatherclocksplus.com/cgi-bin/gfcp/history_of_the_grandfather_clock.html How the Grandfather Clock Got Its Name] ]
