Yannick Bressan

Yannick Bressan is a French director, researcher and university teacher born in Bordeaux, France in 1972.

In 1999, he directed the first play written and presented exclusively and interactively on the Internet. It has since been presented on various French national stages and locations such as the "Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie" (Centre for Art and Media) in Karlsruhe, Germany and the "Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie" (City of Sciences and Industry) in La Villette, Paris. He is interested in the use of the Internet as a tool for writing and presenting artistic and interactive performances, both exclusively on-line and simultaneously on- and off-line.

In 1999, Bressan founded E-toile, a group which performed and researched live art on the Internet. He ran the group until it ceased operating in 2004.

Area of Study

Bressan's research focuses on the cognitive processes which make a subject - theatre within the framework of his research - adhere to a single represented reality. He examines, in a trans-disciplinary reasoning (aesthetic, cognitive sciences, philosophy and 'hard' sciences) our relationship with what is real through the example of a live performance utilising new technologies. He envisages the existence of a particular spatial-temporal dimension, neither completely real, nor completely virtual, underlined by new technologies and crystalised in theatre. His major work has been to postulate the existence of a neurological process to permit a subject to belong to a single reality: the "principle of adhesion". He works to show, via this principle and cognitive science, the connection and the difference between what is seen and what is perceived, making use of the theatrical example.

In addition to the production and direction of numerous plays (both theatre and choreographed performances), he wrote a number of articles and participated in several conferences in France and abroad in the fields of art, live performance and new technologies.
