History

Scottdale, Georgia, is known historically as the location of the Scottdale Cotton Mill. The Scottdale Cotton Mill was founded by Colonel George W. Scott (1829-1903) in 1900. Colonel Scott was originally from Florida, where he was elected governor in 1868. He was also a benefactor of Agnes Scott College. [ [http://www.rampantscotland.com/placenames/placename_atlanta.htm Scottish Placenames: Atlanta, Georgia ] ] The Scottdale Cotton Mill development included the mill and surrounding housing occupied by mill workers. From the 1920's through the 1940's, Scottdale Manufacturing Company even supported a baseball team. [ [http://www.dekalbhistory.org/01_about/01_aa.html DeKalb History Center] ] The mill shut down in 1982, but the workers generally found jobs elsewhere in metro Atlanta's economy. [ "Atlanta Journal Constitution", March 27, 1985 ] However, Scottdale - like nearby Cabbagetown (Atlanta), Georgia, ceased to be a mill town. The only commercial district in Scottdale is on East Ponce de Leon Avenue, which bisects the community from the southwest to the northeast. Your DeKalb Farmers Market, the Huddle House corporate headquarters and antique shops are located on this road, but it remains primarily known for autobody shops and industrial buildings. Efforts were being made beginning in 2007 to rehabilitate East Ponce de Leon Avenue. The modest housing the community is known for is located north and south of this road.
