Sithalapakkam

Sithalapakkam is a quiet suburb of Chennai, India. It is located near Medavakkam. Its PIN is 600073. On one side of Sithalapakkam there is a lake, on its rear side there is a hill. Some portion of this hill is cutout for sand and stone. The hill at its bottom has a man made lake.

One can see some wild birds in Sithalapakkam. Though some buildings have erupted, most of Sithalapakkam has no tar or concrete roads. It's difficult to navigate in rainy season.

Real Estate Boom

Sithalapakkam was a low profile place. The population explosion in Chennai has made it a good real estate investment. Many independent houses are popping up in this region. Due to good ground water and relatively pure air many find Sithalapaakm an attractive place to live in.But due to overdrawal of water by the mineral water companies the ground water level is receding now.

Religion

Sithalapakkam has a secular religious mix. Hindus, Muslims and Christians live side by side. Like all other Indian regions Hindus are more in number than Muslims who are slightly more than Christians

Sithalapakkam has a Amman temple located at Valluvar nagar bus stop. It is very popular place of worship for its Hindu residents and religious festivals are conducted regularly.

There is a Pilliar Kovil located in Sky Lab Avenue, its a small citadel for God Ganesha.

Sithalapakkam has a Mosque in Indra Naagar. Indra nagar has large Muslim community.

There are two churches located at Sithalapakkam.They offer regular masses to Christian population here.

Pollution

Sithalapakkam was a relatively unpolluted place, how ever due factories and human settlement its pollution levels have increased dramatically. Gold Winner Oil company constantly pumps affluents into Palikarnai lake near Sithalapakkam. Though this hasn't resulted in contamination of ground water yet, it's said that this will have adverse effect on ground water tomorrow.

Both Gold Winner Oil company and Popular snacks company located in Sky Lab avenue pmp large volumes of smoke into air. Sky Lab avenue is worst affected by Popular snacks smoke stacks. The heavier than air particles that emerge out of it brings breathing difficulties to residents.

Politics

Sithalapakkam is ruled by a counselor who is elected by the people. DMK and AIADMK are the dominant parties in Sithalapakkam. The current counselor is from the DMK party.

Problems

There are many problems faced by Sithalapakkam residents of which some are listed here

1. Connection for corporation water supply is Rs 7500/- per house which is far higher than any other place around. Though Indian constitution guarantees free drinking water to its citizens, water costs a lot to its residents.

2. Many people in Sithalapakkam live in slums in Lake beds. They do lack proper housing facilities. The slums get flooded in rainy (monsoon) season adding misery to the slum dwellers.

3. Most of the area do not have tar or cement roads which make navigation in rainy seasons difficult.

4. The bus facilities and other transport to this place is inadequate.

5. Power cuts are regular (almost on a daily basis) some lasting up to six hours a day.

6. There are no library or public internet access for students and residents.

7. Air quality is very poor due to neighboring factories pumping smoke. Its particularly worst in Sky Lab Avenue.
