South Science University, in Spanish Universidad Cientifica del Sur or UCSUR, is a higher education and research institution located in Lima, Peru, South America. In a short period of time has developed a solid prestige because of an innovating scheme of teaching, a distinguished staff and a demanding curricula. The university has a policy to strengthen humanitarian attitude and environmental conscience. The Campus has 4 hectares and is neighboring the Pantanos de Villa Reserved Zone, at Villa El Salvador district.

History

UCSUR was founded 1996 by a Promoting Association leaded by Eng. José Dextre MSc and an Organizing Commission leaded by Dr. [http://www.ucsur.edu.pe/personal/personal_cabieses.asp Fernando Cabieses] M.D PhD. The vision of the commission was to create an institution that would help young students to reach academic excellence.

Two years later, the National Commission on the Functioning of Universities (CONAFU) approved the temporary activity of UCSUR by Resolución N°356-98-CONAFU. Dr. [http://www.ucsur.edu.pe/personal/personal_cabieses.asp Fernando Cabieses] was appointed as Rector.

The first official ceremony took place the 26th of March, 1998, in Museo de Osma. The admission campaign started in July.

The first semester began with two schools (Medicine and Engineering) and fifty students. The Campus was originally in Santiago de Surco district. However, a few years later, it was moved to its current location, nearby Pantanos de Villa Reserved Zone.

In March 2006, CONAFU awarded the [http://www.ucsur.edu.pe/home/acreditacion_conafu.asp Definitive Autorization Resolution] to the university, which implies institutional autonomy.

Today, the university has over 1500 students in undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Organizational Structure

Government

A board is in charge of the university's administration. The current CEO is Eng. José Dextre MSc. Among several functions, the board is responsible of appointing the Rector and the Dean of faculties. Also, it coordinates with the Rector's office the financial and academic issues.

Campus and Offices

Campus

The faculties are settled in a campus with 55,000 m2 nearby Pantanos de Villa Reserved Zone, at 19 km from Lima. Its location gives a comfortable atmosphere for learning.

Offices

The Government Building, the Cultural Centre, the Information and Documentation Centre and the Dental Clinic are located in Miraflores district.

Research, Arts and Environment

Research and Development

The university motivates and finance the research and development of projects led by staff and students. The research projects are administrated by the Vice-Rector's Office.

Arts

The university considers artistic expression an important part in the education of its students. The Centre coordinates courses, speeches, seminars, contests and exhibitions.

CAMBIE Foundation

[http://www.ucsur.edu.pe/cambie/CAMBIE CAMBIE Foundation] of the UCSUR has the mission to develop an environmental conscience in Peruvian society. CAMBIE strongly promotes and recognizes projects and endeavours that has contributed to the preservation of natural resources.

Criticism

UCSUR university has been criticised as one of the "new age" universities that don't care about their stundents, but they rather have an economical interest behind the opening of new faculties each semester, that do not go with the line of careers they already have (i.e. new schools of Law and Architecture will be opened as of the 2008 - II semester)----------
