Swimming at the 1984 Summer Olympics - Men's 200 metre freestyle

The final of the Men's 200 metres Freestyle event at the 1984 Summer Olympics was held in the McDonald's Olympic Swim Stadium in Los Angeles, California, on July 29, 1984. The first eight qualified for the final, the next eight for the B-final.

Michael Gross (FRG) led from start to finish. After the first 100 metres, Alberto Mestre (VEN) was in second followed by Michael Heath (USA) in third. After 150 metres, Gross led the field by two body-lengths and Heath moved into second. Gross finished strong to break his own world record beating Heath by nearly three body-lengths. Thomas Fahrner (FRG) came from fifth place to win a three-way battle for third.
