Rolling Meadows High School, or RMHS, is a public four-year high school located in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. It is part of Township High School District 214. It is part of the second largest school district in Illinois, under Chicago. The other 5 schools include Buffalo Grove High School, Elk Grove High School, John Hersey High School, Prospect High School, and Wheeling High School

Rolling Meadows High School first opened for the 1971-1972 school year.

Academics

Rolling Meadows High School, like other schools in Township High School District 214, determines GPA's on a 5.0 scale. Students receive an extra point for taking Advanced Placement classes and an extra half-point for taking honors classes. Thus an A in a non-weighted (regular) class is worth 5.0 points, an A in an honors class is worth 5.5 points, and an A in an Advanced Placement class is worth 6.0 points.

Activities and athletics

The Pacer was nominated for a national award, The Pacemaker, and received a runner-up mentioning in 2007. Also, in 2007, students Adin Lenahan and Jimmy Hibsch both received superior ratings from the Journalism Education Association for review writing and sports writing, respectively.

Rolling Meadows competes in the Mid-Suburban League East Conference and Illinois High School Association. Its mascot is the mustang.

The WildStang Robotics team from Rolling Meadows and Wheeling High Schools, partnered with Motorola, won the 2006 Championship Chairman's Award at the FIRST Championship Event in Atlanta, Georgia. WildStang has also won the FIRST Championship Event in 2003 with team 469 from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and team 65 from Pontiac, Michigan. WildStang's mentor Dan Green of Motorola won the 2007 Championship Woodie Flowers Award, the greatest honor for a mentor to receive. The WildStang FTC (VEX) team MiniStang won the 2007 Illinois Competition in December.

The school has a very active music department, with its marching band, the "Marching Mustangs", participating in several competitions.

Rolling Meadows High School is also host to the state's largestFact|date=February 2007 jazz festival, "Jazz in the Meadows". Area high school jazz bands from all over the Mid-West come to compete. The event finishes with a concert from a notable artist(s).

Rolling Meadows High School's Student Congress team has had members that have won Illinois High School Association state championships in 2005 (Joseph Dunn) and 2006 (Mac LeBuhn), as well as the Junior State of America's 2007 Midwest Region Statesmen of the year (Matt Vasilogambros). During the 2006-2007 season, the Student Congress team placed all five tournaments, won 1st place (small school division) three tournaments, once earning enough points to place 3rd place large school division.

The Yearling, the school's yearbook, is a recurring winner of the Golden Eagle award consisting of outstanding writing and photography. All of the writing in the book is by student staff members and students also pride themselves on taking their own pictures for the book.

Over the past few years, the theatre department has grown leaps and bounds, sending a great number of students representing RMHS in the Illinois High School Theatre Festival's all state production from both the acting and technical backgrounds. Notable students include A.J. Allegra, acting in Macbeth in 2003, Ben Welzenbach, on tech for Ragtime in 2005, Kaitlin Fine for playing Mother in Ragtime, Samantha Galvin, for acting, Jennifer Almgreen, as a student director, Kyle Jacobs, as the first student to both design and build a set for The Wizard of Oz in 2004, and both Robert Stepek and Julie Fry on tech for Les Miserables in 2007, Torian Miller and Robin Quinn, for acting, and Robert Stepek for tech for Parade in 2008. Note that Robert's achievement of being involved with an all state production for two consecutive years is a first in RMHS history, from either acting or technical theatre backgrounds.

The school also has the honor of winning the prestigious Richard W. Calisch Fine Arts Award two years in a row. The award honors excellence in the fine arts within the district, having each school in the district nominate a student for the award. A panel of judges, including Calisch's widow, pick the winner from the nominations. Meadows received the award first in 2007 with Samantha Galvin, and then in 2008 with Adin Lenahan.

Rolling Meadows High School's varsity football team was 8-1 in the regular season of '07. They were seeded 5th spot in the Class 7A playoffs. RMHS has been honored in numerous newspapers for its outstanding achievements of the '07 year.

In the year 2007 the Rolling Meadows High School's water polo team won their first conference championship with a conference record of 4-1 led by Senior Matt Waksmunski and Juniors Steve Gerbatch, Luke Shafer, Dan "TurnOver" McCarthy , and Erik Vliet.

Miscellanea

*This school uses Block Scheduling. There are four classes per day, which alternate between a Gold Day (ex: Math, PE, English, History) and a Purple Day (ex: Info Processing, Seminar, Advanced Literature, Spanish). Each class lasts ninety minutes, with the exception of late start Thursdays, where each class is seventy-eight minutes long. The only exception is a White Day, where all classes meet. White days, however, are not common and the school has gone years at a time without having them. The GPA scale goes up to 5.0.
