HMS Orestes (1781)

HMS Orestes (1781)

HMS Orestes was a Dutch-built brig-sloop of rather unusual appearance, having a high, sweeping stern. She was originally built as a privateer and was captured by the Royal Navy in 1781.

She carried 18 x 9 pounder (4 kg) guns and a crew of 120.

During the period 1790-1792 she was engaged on anti-smuggling patrols off the South Coast of England.

She was presumed lost with Commander William Haggitt and all hands in 1799 in a Hurricane in the Indian Ocean.
