Agate bowl

Agate bowl

The Agate bowl (German: "Achatschale") is one of the family relics of the Habsburg. The bowl originates from the 4th century, probably from Trier. The signature on the bowl reads "B.XRISTO.RI.XXPP". This clearly referred to Jesus Christ and began to be considered a relic. It was even regarded as the Holy Grail.

After the relic's restoration in 1951, the inscription was reinterpreted by art historian Rudolf Egger to read "ARISTO", the name of the stone cutter. There is also concerns that the inscription is in fact an optical deception.
