Charles Morris (jurist)

Charles Morris (jurist)

Charles Morris (8 June 1711 – buried 4 November 1781) was a Canadian army officer, officeholder, and judge.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the Chief Justice of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court from 1776 to 1778.

He fought in the Battle of Grand Pre.

Charles Morris was the author of the British plan to remove the Acadians from their homeland. He devised a scheme whereby Acadian men would be called to ports and then held, insuring that their families would be compliant with orders to evacuate their lands, which were confiscated under the auspice of paying for the deportation.[Brasseaux 2005] All homes and boats were burned to insure the Acadians would have little reason, or ability to return.
