History and Scope

The All India Democratic Women's Association, AIDWA was established in 1981 [ [http://humanrights.progressiveislam.org/index.php/All_India_Democratic_Women's_Association AIDWA profile] ] , and works for women's rights and for their education, employment and status, along with issues like casteism [ [http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/mag/2003/01/05/stories/2003010500020400.htm The Hindu, Jan 05, 2003] ] , communalism, child rights and disaster aid .

National Conference of AIDWA

The first National Conference of AIDWA was held at Chennai in 1981, with delegates from 12 States representing 5.9 lakh members.

The eighth National Conference at Kolkata, 951 delegates from 23 States, representing a membership of around 1.86 crore turned up , where former West Bengal Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu addressed the inaugural session [ [http://www.flonnet.com/fl2423/stories/20071207509110200.htm Eighth National conference of AIDWA; Frontline, Dec. 07, 2007] ] .

Its regional affiliates include Paschimbangla Ganatantrik Mahila Samiti (West Bengal), Ganatantrik Nari Samiti (Tripura), and Janwadi Mahila Sanghatan (Maharashtra).
