History of motorcycle speedway in Sweden

In the 1950s motorcycle speedway became one of Swedens most popular team sports where each fixture often was viewed by audiences between 10000 and 20000 people Cite web|url=http://www.vargarna.nu/main.asp?todo=historia&cols=5|title=Vargarna Speedway|accessyear=2007|accessmonthday=August 30|publisher=Vargarna Speedway|year=2007|author=Vargarna Speedway|language=Swedish] Cite web|url=http://www.kaparna.nu/historik/GMK/50-talet.htm|title=Slottsskogsvallen -Kaparna Speedway|accessyear=2007|accessmonthday=August 30|publisher=kaparna.nu|author=kaparna.nu|language=Swedish] . The Swedish speedway league was founded a few years earlier in 1948 and was inspired by british speedway including adopting the British teams nicknames in Swedish versions. For instance the Norrköping team became Vargarna (English: "The Wolves"), the Eskilstuna team became Smederna (English: "The Blacksmiths") and the club Motorsällskapet became Getingarna (English: "The Wasps"). As popularity of the sport grew there were many new clubs founded all around Sweden and during the 1950s more than 30 different clubs competed at least one season in the league system Cite web|url=http://www.speedway.org/history/|title=History: Speedway and Longtrack|accessyear=2007|accessmonthday=August 30|publisher=speedway.org|author=speedway.org|language=English] . Unfortunately many of these new teams were short lived and only survived a few years but one can still find some of those new teams of the 50s in today's Elitserien.
