Mesimvria, Evros

Mesimvria (Greek: Μεσημβρία meaning noon) is a village in the northern part of the city of Alexandroupoli, Greece, west of the metropolitan area and 20 km west of downtown. Its 2001 population was 149 for the settlement. Makri is also located east-southeast of Komotini and southeast of Sapes.

Geography

Its geography consists of farmlands within the coastline. Its length is 5 km long from north to south and 1 to 1.5 km in width from east to west. Forests are sporaidically founded including its coastline. The mountain ranges lies to the north and are a mixture of forests and barren land, the northern part are mainly underpopulated. The old and the new Egnatia Odos (GR-2/E90, Alexandroupoli - Thessaloniki - Kozani - Igoumenitsa) is to the north with its nearby interchange 10 km north with a curvy road over its valley.

History

Mesimvria was ruled by the Ottoman Empire until the Balkan Wars of 1913, instead of Greece, it joined Bulgaria since it was invaded by them and administered until the Greco-Turkish War which finally ceded to Greece mainly without any battle. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, many of its buildings were rebuilt. Some of its residents moved to other parts of Greece and North America. The population dramatically lost between 1981 and 2001.

Electricity and automobiles arrived in the 1960s, it was linked with pavement in the late-20th century, television arrived in the 1980s. Internet and computers arrived in the late-1990s.

Mesimvria was battered by heavy rainfall on Monday August 6, 2007 and flooded the area and its village, its beaches were unsafe and muddy. Off the Thracian Sea by the coasts of Makri by its campground and beach, a trailer floated as far as 1 km away from the seashore. Some properties were damaged and several roads were closed.

Mesimvria has a school, church, banks, a post office, and a square ("plateia"), its nearest lyceum (middle school), a gymnasium (secondary school) is in Makri.
