WPXO originally began as an independent station on channel 23 had the call letters W23BA. In
1996 , the station was sold toPaxson Communications [Asset Purchase Agreement. It became a translator for the then WHAI out of Stamford, CT, which was also owned Paxson, who was planning to launch a new network with WHAI as the flagship of the network. In 1998, after Paxson's plans to use the the station, now known called WIPX, as the flagship for Pax TV fell through, WPXO became a translator for their new flagship station,WPXN-TV . The following year, due to potential future interference from the then WHSI, who was assigned channel 23 for its digital signal, it moved to channel 34.On
September 11, 2001 , thetransmitter facilities of WPXN, as well as six other New York City television stations and several radio stations, were destroyed when two hijacked airplanes crashed into and destroyed theWorld Trade Center towers. The next day, the FCC authorized WPXO to temporarily move its signal to channel 31, boost its power to 240 kW, and change its call letters to W31CK to replace WPXN's signal [Fybush, Scott (September 10 , 2002). 9/11 Plus One.
