Eoin Murphy (born 1979) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Shamrocks and with the Waterford senior inter-county team. During his childhood years he attended St. Colmans school in Fermoy. It was here Murphy began to distinguish himself winning a Dean Ryan medal and a Dr. Harty Cup.

Playing career

College Years

In 1997 he won his first Fitzgibbon cup. 1998 was not a good year for murph as he suffered a serious leg brake and missed the entire season where UCC retained "the Fitz." However Murphy made his comeback with a vengeance in 1999 with a string of sterling displays featuring an appearance in the Cork County Final, losing to Blackrock.

Club

Murphy plays his club hurling with his local Shamrocks club in Knockanore. He made his début in 1995 at the age of 16. In 1997 Eoin won a Waterford Minor Hurling Championship title with the combined Tallow/Shamrocks clubs. In 1998 he suffered a serious leg injury that ruled him out for the season, but he vowed to make his comeback the following year with Shamrocks and the Waterford U21's. 1999 was a busy year for Murphy as he kept his promise making the Waterford U21 team and appearing in five county finals. However he lost four of these including the u21 hurling and football finals. He did win an Intermediate county title playing a starring role in the replay were Keiren "skippy" Murphy kicked his hurley over the bar while attempting to score a point! During 2000-01 Eoin tried in vain to keep Shamrocks senior but 1st round draws of Ballygunner and Mount Sion in Successive years proved too much. They were relegated in 2001, but bounced back in 2003 winning the Intermediate county league title before narrowly losing a Western final to Abbyside. In 2004 Eoin won the Western Intermediate final with Shamrocks again but this time lost the county final to Portlaw.

Inter-county

Murphy made his senior championship début for Waterford in 2001 at a time when the county's hurling fortunes were on the way up. The following year he won his first Munster medal. It was Waterford's first provincial title since 1963, however, his side were later defeated in the All-Ireland semi-final. Two years later in 2004 Murphy won a second Munster medal following a defeat of Cork in, what has been described as, the greatest Munster final of all-time. Once again Waterford were later defeated in the All-Ireland semi-final. The following two years brought little success for Murphy and Waterford. In 2005 and 2006 they reached the All-Ireland knock-out series, however, they were beaten on both occasions by old rivals Cork. In spite of this lack of success Murphy won an All-Star award in 2006.

In 2007 Murphy won a National Hurling League medal following a victory over Kilkenny in the final. It was Waterford's first national title since 1963. He later collected a third Munster title following a win over surprise finalists Limerick. As a result of this win Murphy is a member of a unique group of players from Waterford who have won three provincial medals.
