James D. "Jim" Squier (born July 18, 1946) is currently a Senior District Judge in Texas jurist formerly presiding over the 312th District Court of Harris County, Texas, the nation's third most populous county, encompassing the city of Houston.

Born in Chicago, Illinois July 18, 1946, Squier, whose family moved to Houston in 1949, has lived continually in Houston or Harris County since 1949, attending Garden Villas Elementary and Jesse H. Jones High School. Squier earned from the University of Houston, a Bachelor of Science in 1968. While a teacher and coach in the Pasadena, Texas school district, Squier earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Houston in 1974. In private practice from 1974 to 1987, Squier was appointed in 1987 as Associate Judge of the 312th District Court and in 1994, was elected as presiding judge of that court, where he has served following reelection in 1998, 2002, and 2006.

Members of the Houston Bar Association judged Squier the highest rated district judge in the 1998 Judicial Opinion poll. He was chosen 2002 Family Judge of the Year by the Houston Police Officers Union, the 2004 Civil Judge of the Year [ [http://bestof.houstonpress.com/bestof/award.php?award=31653&year=] Houston Press] ] and, from 1995-2003, was selected by colleagues as the Administrative Judge of the Family Trial Division.

CAREER CHANGE & POLITICS

After 20 years in a family court, Judge Squier stepped off the bench with three years left to his term in order to run for Congress - Texas Congressional District 22 encompassing parts of Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston, and Brazoria counties.

District courts are the highest level trial court in the Texas judicial system and the 312th is one of 59 district courts with jurisdiction county-wide and it handles primarily family matters.
