In taxonomy, "Thermococcus" is a genus of.extreme thermophiles in the family the Thermococcaceae. [See the NCBI [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Taxonomy/Browser/wwwtax.cgi?mode=Info&id=2263 webpage on Thermococcus] . Data extracted from the cite web | url=ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/pub/taxonomy/ | title=NCBI taxonomy resources | publisher=National Center for Biotechnology Information | accessdate=2007-03-19]

They consist of gram-negative spheres that move with flagella. They are organothrophic anaerobes, growing in temperatures above 70°C. They require elemental sulphur as electron acceptor in these growth reactions, producing hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and carbon dioxide (CO2)
