WGMN is a Sports Radio formatted broadcast radio station affiliated with ESPN Radio.

WGMN is licensed to Roanoke, Virginia, serving the Metro Roanoke area. WGMN is owned and operated by 3 Daughters Media.

History

WGMN launched as WROV, which was the leading Top 40 station in Roanoke during the 60s and 70s and was owned by Burt & Muriel Levine.

In 1980, competition to WROV came from 100,000 watt WXLK "K92" and WROV's ratings waned.

In the late 80s, Tom Joyner purchased WROV from the Levines. Joyner (no relation to the nationally syndicated DJ) had just purchased WMVA-FM in Martinsville and moved the station's tower closer to Roanoke with the intention of debuting an FM Rock station in the market. WMVA-FM would become WROV-FM.

Shortly after the purchase, WROV became an automated oldies station.

Joyner later sold both stations to Benchmark Communications, who in turn sold the stations to what is now Clear Channel. In 1998, WROV changed calls to WGMN and became a sports talk station.

In 2006, Clear Channel began selling some it's smaller stations. WGMN would be sold to 3 Daughters Media.
