The Shetland Times

The Shetland Times

The Shetland Times is a weekly newspaper publication in Shetland published every Friday, and a part of a long-running successful publishing concern based in Lerwick, Shetland.

The newspaper has a circulation of over 11,300. The Times, as it is commonly known, was established in 1872 and costs 70 pence. It was voted Newspaper of the Year by the Highlands and Islands Media Awards in 2006.

As a publisher, The Shetland Times has a long and distinguished history, involving the production of key original work, as well as a healthy list of reprints.

From February 2006 until February 2008 the newspaper was edited by Jonathan Lee, formerly of the Aberdeen Evening Express. Lee left the Shetland Times following a period of turmoil at the paper culminating in a vote of no confidence in him being passed by newsroom staff [ [http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/jan/03/pressandpublishing Brook, Stephen and Kiss, Jemima (date|3 January 2008) "Shetland Times editor exits amid unrest" "The Guardian"] ] [ [http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=1&storycode=39907 Staff (date|10 January 2008) "Lee ‘positive’ despite Shetland revolt" "The Press Gazette"] ] [ [http://force10.co.uk/sn_test/archives/news_01_2008/Shetland%20Times%20editor%20abandons%20ship.htm Bevington, Pete (date|3 January 2007) "Shetland Times editor abandons ship" "The Shetland News"] "date is questionable"] .
