He was born in the area of Salem, Massachusetts to Edward Bishop Jr. (the sawyer) and his first wife Hannah Raymond. He was baptized in Salem, Massachusetts, April 23 1648. [ A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England. James Savage, Boston MA: Little Brown & Co., 1860. v 1 pp 183. ]

In his Genealogical Dictionary, James Savage may have confused him and his father, this was not the only one of the old sources to be confused about the 3 or 4 Edward Bishops (3 of whom were father son and grandson) all of whom were living in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692.
