The IEEE Communications Society is a professional society of the IEEE. It is also known by the abbreviation ComSoc. The Society focuses on two principal areas: the science of, and education about, communications engineering with the goal of advancing the state of the field; and professional development so that the status of its members is raised along with the standards to which the profession is held.[1]

Contents

Overview

The IEEE Communications Society sponsors several conferences every year such as the International Conference on Communications and GLOBECOM,[2] and operates close to 100 local chapters around the world.[3] It coordinates the operation of several councils, task forces, and technical committees, e.g. the Internet Technical Committee. The society participates in educational activities (including distance learning) and in accreditation of higher education programs within its fields of interest (including Computer Science and Computer Engineering). It operates about a dozen working groups and committees on the development of industrial standards.

History

Founded in 1952 with the formation of IRE’s (the Institute of Radio Engineers) Professional Group on Communications Systems (PGCS), IEEE Communications Society has evolved into a diverse group of global industry professionals with a common interest in advancing all communications technologies.[4]

Committees

Technical Committees

The Communication Society's technical committees define and implement the technical directions of the Society. As a fundamental element of the Society all members are invited - and encouraged - to participate in one or more of its technical committees. These committees - networks of professionals with common interests in communications - usually meet twice a year at major conferences. Throughout the year, these committees also play a major role in determining which events (conferences, workshops, etc.) are technically co-sponsored by ComSoc.[7]
