Lijstduwer

Lijstduwer

Lijstduwer ("list pusher") is a Dutch term for the last candidate on the party list.

In the Netherlands often well known non-politicians take this position. They are officially a candidate for parliament, but they are put at the end of the party list, and from that position they the party, in order for it to receive more votes. The candidate is not likely to become member of parliament, nor does he or she want to. In 2003 writer Harry Mulisch was lijstduwer for the Party for the Animals.
