Night Light - A Community Installation for Peace

Night-Light a Community Art Installation for Peace first took place on Thursday, September 21st 2006 in Santa Cruz, CA, in conjunction with the United Nations International Peace Day.

The Santa Cruz Institute of Contemporary Arts along with hundreds of volunteers placed five hundred 15,00,000 candle power spotlights every 30 feet along a three mile stretch of coast known as West Cliff Drive. The lights were turned on at 9pm pointing towards the sky and remained on until each lamp burned out at 9.40pm. Almost 20,000 people from this and other communities came out to participate in this display of solidarity about the very important issue of peace.

“Night-Light” will be an annual event that will grow throughout the country and through light show the world our passion about the ongoing need for peace.

In Observation of International Peace Day, You Are Invited To Shine Your Light for the 2nd Annual Night Light: Community Art Installation for Peace on Thursday, September 20th, 2007 from 9 - 10 pm, from Lighthouse Point on West Cliff Drive, home of Steamers Lane, world-famous cold water classic surfing spot to the Walton Lighthouse at the Yacht Harbor.

This is a COMMUNITY Art Installation. A, for the most part, silent, short, observation of what peace means to you. No speakers, no protests, no food booths, beer garden or bands. Just a wonderful opportunity for all who call Santa Cruz home, to turn on a light, join your community on the coastline between our two picturesque Lighthouses and show other communities around the world, OUR light.

So bring the kids, your friends, bring Grandma, the dog, the cat,

Bring your flashlights, your keychain lights, your tap lights,

But most of all bring Yourself and Your Light to our beautifulcoastline on September 20 at 9 pm and Be A Light for Peace!

Between September 11 and October 11 there are over 5,000 events around the world addressing the issue of peace in our time.
