Many Iraqis fled Iraq to Saudi Arabia during the 8 year Iran-Iraq war, most of them being Arab Shia's emigrating from Southern Iraq.

There are an estimated 5,200 Iraqi refugees in the Rafha camp remain from an original figure of 33,000 Iraqis who fled in the aftermath of the second Gulf conflict and the uprising inside Iraq. The Iraqis living in Rafha have been enduring difficult conditions in this isolated camp since 1991 and feel abandoned by the international community.
