Admiral Sir Richard Vesey Hamilton GCB (28 May 1829 - 17 September 1912) was a senior naval officer and First Naval Lord. His father was rector of Little Chart in Kent.

Naval career

Hamilton joined the Royal Navy in 1843. Between 1852 and 1855 he served as a Lieutenant on HMS "Resolute" where he was involved in a search for Sir John Franklin's ill-fated expedition to find the North West passage.

In 1856 he served in HMS|Haughty and was involved in the Second Anglo-Chinese War.

Between 1862 and 1873 he commanded successively HMS "Vesuvius", HMS|Sphynx and HMS "Achilles".

He was Commander-in-Chief, China from 1885 to 1887 and First Naval Lord from 1889 to 1891.

Later career

In 1896 he wrote a manual entitled 'Naval Administration'. He died in Chalfont St Peter in Buckinghamshire.
