Hornsea Mere is generally described as the largest natural freshwater lake in Yorkshire [cite web

] and lies to the west of Hornsea in the East Riding. It covers an area of convert|467|acre|km2, is convert|2|mi|km long, ¾ mile at its widest point and convert|12|ft|m at its deepest point.It is a popular tourist attraction offering visitors rowing, sailing, boat trips and fishing.

It is also a Special Protection Area as a result of its shallowness that results in a diverse range of swamp and fen plants. It hosts many species of birds throughout the year and is of international importance for a migratory population of gadwall.

It was featured on the television programme "Seven Natural Wonders" as one of the wonders of Yorkshire.
