Megapolitan Area

Megapolitan Area

A Megapolitan Area is a clustered network of American cities whose population exceeds or will exceed 10 million by the year 2040. There are currently 10 megapolitans identified in the United States. The criteria and terms were introduced in a July 2005 report [http://www.mi.vt.edu/uploads/megacensusreport.pdf "Beyond Megalopolis" by the Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech] by Robert E. Lang and Dawn Dhavale of the Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech.A later 2007 article by Lang and Nelson uses 20 megapolitan areas grouped into 10 megaregions. [http://www.surdna.org/usr_doc/The_Rise_of_the_Megapolitans.pdf] The [http://www.america2050.org/ America 2050 Project] by the Regional Plan Association defines 10 similar "megaregions". The concept draws on the earlier idea of Megalopolis (city type).

The following table ranks the Lang/Dhavale megapolitan areas by population as of 2000 (in millions):
