Burlington is a city in and the county seat of Coffey County, Kansas, United States.GR|6 The population was 2,790 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Burlington is located at coor dms|38|11|40|N|95|44|44|W|city (38.194420, -95.745532)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,790 people, 1,122 households, and 713 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,354.7 people per square mile (522.9/km²). There were 1,277 housing units at an average density of 620.1/sq mi (239.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.95% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.61% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 1.79% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,122 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% were non-families. 33.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,174, and the median income for a family was $43,021. Males had a median income of $30,946 versus $20,357 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,443. About 5.2% of families and 7.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 9.8% of those age 65 or over.

Wolf Creek

Located just north of Burlington is the Wolf Creek Nuclear generating station. This plant was built on the edge of the Wolf Creek Reservoir, now the Coffey County reservoir. The plant generates electricity for much of southern Kansas and is a local landmark.
