The Old North

The Old North

The Old North (or Old North Columbus as it is presently called) as a general term is commonly referenced as the area north of Woodruff Avenue to Slate Run/Parkview Drive, both east to the Conrail Railroad tracks and west to the Olentangy River Road in the University Area, Columbus, Ohio. Old North Columbus includes several smaller neighborhoods within these general boundaries including; the Iuka Ravine, Indianola Forest, Oakland & Northwood Ave, and Glen Echo neighborhoods. Other neighborhoods within Old North Columbus include Washington Beach, Washington Bluffs, So-Hud, and AwesomeTown. Washington Beach is the dominant neighborhood and the thought by some to be the cultural hub of Columbus as well as the only place in the world named after a fictional location in a video game.

The neighborhood

Old North Columbus traditionally has a higher percentage of homeownership than the core campus area to the south. However, it combines the diversity and liveliness of an urban academic feel with the tranquility of a quiet family neighborhood. Old North Columbus is home to three Columbus Public Schools; Medary Elementary, North High and the Special Needs Center, all of which are historically significant structures. It also has several churches, restaurants and other small businesses along High Street and Indianola Avenue.

Natural and historic features

Old North Columbus includes Slate Run, the Olentangy River, both the Iuka and Glen Echo Ravines, and other naturally beautiful features. There are also several historic neighborhoods and buildings including the 1806 Beers log cabin, built three years after Ohio was made a state and the site of the 1814 Wilcox/Piatt/Hess/Minot Mill.
