Causeway Classic

Causeway Classic

The Causeway Classic is the annual College football game between the UC Davis Aggies and the Sacramento State Hornets. In the past, the Causeway Carriage was transported to the winner of the game at the loser's expense. Today, the teams exchange a Causeway Classic Trophy made from cement taken from the Yolo Causeway.

History of the Game

The two teams first played each other in 1954 and have played every year since. From 2008 onwards Davis-hosted games will be held at Aggie Stadium. Sacramento State-hosted Causeway's are held at Hornet Stadium.

The name "Causeway Classic" began to be used in the early 1980's and is credited to former Sacramento State sports information director Mike Duncan. The word "causeway" refers to the Yolo Causeway, which is the long bridge on Interstate 80 over the Yolo Bypass that connects Davis, California and Sacramento, California.

Trophy

Since 1961, the winning team has received the Causeway Carriage, an authentic 19th century carriage, as the trophy. Today, the Carriage is no longer exchanged between the two teams; instead, a trophy made from cement from the Yolo Causeway is awarded to the winner.
