Gas volume units nomenclature SI and Metric

Gas volume units nomenclature SI and metric.

Petroleum Engineers typically use these units as per the below nomenclature and character case.

Volumes

m3 = a cubic meter

E3m3 = a thousand cubic meters

E6m3 = a million cubic meters

bbl = a barrel

Mbbl = a thousand barrels

(the “mish-mash” units of Kbbl is also used at Santos but is generally avoided.)

MMbbl = a million barrels.

Mscf = a thousand standard cubic feet.

MMscf = a million standard cubic feet.

Bcf = a billion standard cubic feet. (where a billion is 10E9)

Conversion Factors

The factors commonly used are:

Oil conversion factor from m3 to bbl is 6.28981100

Oil conversion factor from m3 to Mbbl is 6.28981100E-3

Oil conversion factor from m3 to MMbbl is 6.28981100E-6

Gas conversion factor from m3 to Bcf is 35.493710E-9

Gas conversion factor from m3 to MMscf is 35.493710E-6

Gas conversion factor from m3 to Mscf is 35.493710E-3

** Note that the m3 gas conversion factor takes into account a difference in the standard temperature base for measurement of gas volumes in metric and imperial units. The standard temperature for metric measurement is 15 degrees C (ie. 59 Degrees F) while for imperial measurement, the standard temperature is 60 degrees F. Gas undergoes a slight expansion when the temperature is raised from 15 Degrees C {59 Degrees F} to 60 Degrees F. This expansion is built into the above factor for gas.
