Hardinsburg is a city in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,345 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Breckinridge CountyGR|6. The city's namesake, Captain William Hardin, established the city as a fort in 1780. Hardinsburg is located at coor dms|37|46|35|N|86|27|18|W|city (37.776336, -86.455010)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.4 km²), of which, 3.6 square miles (9.2 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (1.65%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,345 people, 964 households, and 583 families residing in the city. The population density was 658.1 people per square mile (254.3/km²). There were 1,078 housing units at an average density of 302.5/sq mi (116.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.06% White, 8.61% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.41% of the population.

There were 964 households out of which 25.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% were married couples living together, 13.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.5% were non-families. 36.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.83.

In the city the population was spread out with 20.3% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,447, and the median income for a family was $36,214. Males had a median income of $29,375 versus $20,331 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,307. About 14.6% of families and 19.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.5% of those under age 18 and 18.9% of those age 65 or over.
