On ne change pas (meaning We Don't Change) is a greatest hits album by Canadian singer Céline Dion, which sums up twenty five years of her French career. It's her first official French language 'best of' album in almost twenty years. On ne change pas is Dion's 22nd French album and 33rd if counting all longplays. It was released on September 30, 2005.[1]

On November 23, 2009, Triple Best Of was released in France. It contains 3 CDs from the Long Box version of On ne change pas in new digipak.[2] Also on this date, the 2CD version was re-released in a slim metal case.

Contents

Album information

The album features French number 1 singles, such as "Pour que tu m'aimes encore," "Je sais pas" or "Sous le vent," and many other hits. It contains also rare songs like "Ma Nouvelle-France" (from the 2004 movie Nouvelle-France), "Plus haut que moi" (French adaptation of Jennifer Rush's song "Higher Ground") and many early recordings (beginning with Dion's first single "Ce n'était qu'un rêve" from 1981). On ne change pas includes three new songs: "Je ne vous oublie pas," "Tous les secrets" (theme from Asterix and the Vikings) and "I Believe in You" (duet with Il Divo). Material on this album is mostly written by Eddy Marnay, Luc Plamondon, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Erick Benzi, and Jacques Veneruso.

Many versions of On ne change pas were released worldwide, some of them with a bonus DVD featuring almost 30 minutes of exclusive images and the video for "Je ne vous oublie pas." The basic 2CD version (with or without the DVD) was released in September/October 2005 (with two different tracklists: one for North America and the other for Europe and Asia). The long box containing 3CD and 1DVD was released at the end of November 2005. And finally 1CD version was issued in March/April 2006. However, the album wasn't released in Australia and New Zealand. It became available there later on iTunes.

Céline Dion visited France in October 2005, after three years of absence, to promote her compilation and appeared in various TV shows.

She has recorded also an English version of "Tous les secrets," called "Let Your Heart Decide" which was featured as the single's B-side.

An accompanying On ne change pas DVD was also released on November 21, 2005, including all French music videos and a bonus material.

Dion was nominated for the Female Artist of the Year and Song of the Year - "Je ne vous oublie pas" at the 2006 Félix Awards.[3]

Critical reception

Professional ratings
Review scores
Source Rating
Allmusic 4/5 stars[4]

The album met with positive reviews. Allmusic said that this is "a companion piece to 1999's All the Way… A Decade of Song, containing "dance-pop-friendly numbers" and "passionate, melodramatic ballads." "For those who don't speak French, getting past the roadblock of not being able to understand the subject material will lead to a greater, more holistic appreciation of the depth and prolific output of Dion's career in such a short span."[5]

Chart success

On ne change pas became another commercial success in French-speaking countries, spending seven consecutive weeks at number 1 in France and three weeks at the top in Belgium Wallonia. The album peaked at number 2 in Canada and Switzerland. In non-Francophone countries the album reached number 11 in Greece, number 19 in Poland, number 30 in Finland, number 33 in Belgium Flanders, number 54 in Italy, number 59 in the Netherlands, number 72 in Germany, and number 80 in Hungary. On the European Top 100 Albums, On ne change pas peaked at number 46.

A week after its release, On ne change pas has sold more than 108,000 copies in France, setting a historic record for a 'best of' album.[6] It became the best selling compilation album in France in 2005.[7] On ne change pas spent over a year on the French chart and was certified 3x platinum.[8]

In Canada, the album has sold 34,000 copies in its first week,[9] and later it was certified 3x platinum.[10] It was also certified platinum in Belgium[11] and gold in Switzerland.[12] On ne change pas has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide.[13]

The leadoff single "Je ne vous oublie pas" reached number 2 in France and was certified silver. "Tous les secrets" peaked at number 20 and "I Believe in You" at number 30. The latter was also released in the United States as a promotional single, reaching number 31 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks.
