La Grange is a city in Oldham County, Kentucky, United States. It was founded in 1827 and named after the French home of General Lafayette. The population was 5,676 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Oldham CountyGR|6.

Geography

La Grange is located at coor dms|38|24|24|N|85|22|46|W|city (38.406612, -85.379382)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 square miles (9.8 km²), of which, 3.8 square miles (9.7 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.06%) is water.

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 5,676 people, 2,216 households, and 1,502 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,514.8 people per square mile (584.4/km²). There were 2,330 housing units at an average density of 621.8/sq mi (239.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.47% White, 5.09% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.33% from other races, and 1.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.56% of the population.

There were 2,216 households out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 15.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 33.6% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $37,778, and the median income for a family was $46,194. Males had a median income of $33,649 versus $25,347 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,566. About 9.1% of families and 10.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.8% of those under age 18 and 7.5% of those age 65 or over.

Railroad

La Grange is unusual in that a railroad line runs right through downtown. Cars are forced to park on either side of the tracks when a train is passing through. The speed limit for trains in downtown is 10 mph. CSX owns the trackage.
