King tide

King tide

A king tide is the name given to exceptionally high tides in Tuvalu. Elsewhere these tides are known as spring tides. Such tides can have a devastating effect on the islands' people and wildlife due to the islands being extremely low lying atolls. Such effects are increasingly worsened by rising sea levels.cite web|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7205226.stm|title=Paradise in peril - King Tide diary|last=Shukman|first=David|year=2008|publisher=BBC] cite web|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7203313.stm|title=Tuvalu struggles to hold back tide|last=Shukman|first=David|year=2008|publisher=BBC]

As with all spring tides, king tides occur with the coming of new and full moons. Such times are commonly believed to caused madness, a possible origin of the word "lunacy".cite web|url=http://www.abc.net.au/science/scribblygum/kingtide/default.htm|title=King of all Tides|last=Thomas|first=Abbie|year=2002|publisher=ABC]
