The seedeaters and their relatives are a group of passerine birds formerly placed in the bunting family Emberizidae. They are now known to be tanagers closely related to Darwins finches. Fact|date=December 2007 Indeed, some seedeaters are closer to these, while the more "true" seedeaters form a clade with certain tanagers. A few "atypical" seedeaters are closely related to a number of tanagers, many of which (such as the flowerpiercers) have peculiarly adapted bills.

They are seed-eating Central and South American birds with a distinctively conical bill.
