Ge Fei (author)

Ge Fei (author)

Ge Fei (zh-cpw|c=格非|p= Gé Fēi |w=Ke Fei, born 1964), pen-name for Liu Yong (刘勇), is a notable contemporary Chinese author whose works were prominent during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ge Fei was considered one of the preeminent experimental writers during that period, and he is currently a professor of literature at Qinghua University.

Biography

Ge Fei was born in Dantu, Jiangsu in 1964. He graduated from East China Normal University in 1985. His most prominent work, however, is the recent novel 人面桃花, "Renmian Taohua" (2004), which explores the concept of utopia, and is written with many classical allusions. It is the first book of a planned trilogy. The second book, 山河入梦 "Shanhe Rumeng", was published in 2007.

The title of this book has been used by the director Du Haibin for his documentary on a gay club in Chengdu (2005); the English name for the film is "Beautiful Men" but this is not direct translation. Additionally, it would be inappropriate for the book title to be translated as such, especially since there is no gay connection in the novel and the main protagonist is female. To reiterate, the film has NO connection with Ge Fei's novel.
