Overview

The town was first settled in the 1890s as part of a gold rush but today is a virtual ghost town. Today, Sandstone is the administrative centre of the Shire of Sandstone Local Government Area. Sights to see include London Bridge, a natural bridge, which is part of the Sandstone Heritage Trail. It was the inspiration for the mining town in Randolph Stow's 1963 novel "Tourmaline".cite web
